K-Kids are on a roll
Before the season began, Northampton head baseball coach Mick Sugra ordered t-shirts with the saying "Demand Excellence" on the front.
Over the past two weeks, it could not have been more fitting.
Entering this week, the Konkrete Kids began the week with an impressive seven-game winning streak in which Noah Durnin threw a no-hitter against nemesis and state power Parkland in a 5-1 victory and the Kids' staff allowed an average of one run a game during the stretch.
The loss was Parkland's first of the season and raised the Kids overall record to 9-3 with a stellar 8-2 league slate in the competitive East Penn Conference.
Offensively, they finished last week's play with an overall team batting average of .331. the highest mark since Sugra's first year of his five-year stand. The winning streak has been the longest of his tenure..
However, Sugra wants to keep it in the proper perspective.
"We just take it day-by-day," he stated. "We want it and improve every day. We can see us getting better with each game and that's really our goal. We want to win the small goals and then think about the bigger ones like getting to our league and districts playoffs."
Early in the season, Sugra recalled how his club struggled with getting timely hits. He noted how losses against Freedom (5-4) and Pleasant Valley (11-9) easily could have been reversed with some big hits in key situations.
Since then, the Kids have been hitting on all phases of the game.
On the mound, Durnin had a 1.30 and DiMieri had an ERA of 0.76.
Justin Bragg posted an ERA of 2.6 and Harley Davidson had one of 2.80. Ryan Wehrli and Will Stackhouse have also seen time on the mound to round out a deep staff.
"Durnin and DiMieri have been exceptional out there," said Sugra. "Wehrli has been lights out lately. We have a number of kids throwing, and that has really helped develop the staff."
