Girls get some wins

Three one-run losses by the same score surely were not what Kevin Mann expected from his Northampton softball team.

But, Mann's Konkrete Kids - after losing 3-2 to Freedom, Parkland and Emmaus - finally got on the winning track with a 10-0 whitewash of Easton on Monday.

Playing their first home game, the Kids parlayed a five-run fifth inning to an 8-0 lead and wrapped up the win on Jillian Muthard's two-run single in the sixth to force a 10-run rule win.

The Kids, now 2-3 in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference's Skyline Division, made it two wins in a row Tuesday when they defeated Whitehall 3-2 in a rain-shortened, six-inning game behind the pitching of Muthard.

After Northampton's loss to Emmaus last Thursday, Mann told his Kids "one less error or one more key hit kept us from being 3-0."

After the way his team handled Easton on Monday he told the girls, "I knew you were capable of doing it. Now you found out for yourselves."

Northampton lost to Freedom last Tuesday in the Patriots last at bat, then led Parkland 2-1 Wednesday going into the bottom of seventh but lost on a misplayed infield fly, a triple and an infield hit. Then Thursday, Emmaus trailed 2-0 but came back for a 3-2 win on a seventh-inning sacrifice fly.

Monday, sophomore Hallie Muffley opened the game for Northampton with a triple and scored on a perfect bunt by senior Ali Reppert. The Kids made it 3-0 in the second on a two-run single by Emily Schwartz and broke the game open on a walk and five straight singles in the fifth.

Schwartz walked and Muffley and Reppert beat out bunts to load the bases and Auria Enright singled home Schwartz before Muthard and Kendal Reed followed with two-run singles.

The Kids then ended the game in the sixth on Muthard's second two-run single after two Easton errors.

Meanwhile, sophomore Taylor Keeney pitched a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.

The Kids return to action Thursday and Friday with home games against Pleasant Valley and Stroudsburg, respectively. They close out a busy week by visiting Bethlehem Catholic on Saturday.
