Boys start to improve
With each passing week, new Northampton boys' volleyball coach Dave Faust is watching his club mature.
Faust, the former head girls' coach at NHS, replaced Doug Fehnel who guided the team to a 19-4 record and a 10-2 league mark. He is also in the process of retooling the club following the loss of conference MVP Mike Holihan, who helped lead the team to a new seasonal mark in wins.
In the early going, the Kids beat Nazareth and lost matches to Whitehall and Parkland. The Kids also had a strong showing in the Penn Manor tournament, where they lost in the semifinals.
"We're starting to get better," said Faust, who previously served as the Kids' JV boys' coach and had a boys' stint at Parkland. "We obviously have to fill the void of his loss, but we have been working very hard as a unit.
"We have been patient, and we have been doing a good job defensively. We have to work on getting better offensively."
Senior Josh Morgan, an outside hitter, is the team's captain and has made an impact with the team.
"Josh (Morgan) has done a great job in helping lead this team. They have a new coach and a new system. But everyone is adjusting and we're looking for results at the end of the season."
Along with Morgan, Faust will look to fellow seniors outside hitter Matt Mattau and setter Dave Cattano along with juniors libero/hitter Charlie Saloum and middle hitter Austin Cooper to provide their veteran presence.
"They all have been doing a great job and giving us 110 percent out there," said Faust. "They all have been leading us in kills and digs, and making themselves felt out there. We'll look to all of them to help us down the road."
Faust is optimistic his club can continue to jell toward a postseason run.
"We want to be able to put it all together at the end of the season," added Faust. "There are enough experienced teams in our conference and we want to be in the upper echelon of the league. We realize that this is a long season, and our results should matter more at the end of the season.
"Our goal is to continue to get better as the seasons goes on, and then qualify for the district playoffs."
