Baseball gets big win
Northampton's baseball team gained a big win Tuesday afternoon, but they still haven't solved one of their lingering problems.
The Konkrete Kids defeated Whitehall 2-1 to even their season record at 2-2 and boosted their conference mark to 2-1 in the ever-competitive East Penn Conference Skyline Division.
Starting pitcher Nick DeMieri went the distance and scattered five hits. Ian Csencsits pushed the winning run across with a safety squeeze that scored Collin Shambo after Shambo knocked in Harley Davidson with a double in the bottom of the sixth inning. Whitehall brought a 1-0 lead into the stanza and the Kids also had five hits on the afternoon.
Through their first three games, the Kids dropped a 5-4 decision, won a 5-3 contest over Emmaus, and lost an 11-1 decision to Parkland.
"It was a big win and a big league win for us," said Kids' head coach Mick Sugra. "Our pitching has been steady all season, but we just haven't come up with the big hits. Our M.O. this season has been leaving runners on base and in scoring position.
"We needed all of our 21 outs today. We have seen some good pitching and some teams aces through our first four games and we have battled through it."
Sugra noted the Kids left eight men on base against Whitehall as well as a number of them in losses against Freedom and Parkland.
"We need some guys to step up and start hitting and hitting in the clutch," stressed Sugra. "Our guys need to step up. We're happy to be .500 at this point. We have been competitive, but we need to turn it up."
Sugra stated his team got back to workouts Wednesday, notably weight training, during their off day. They played Pleasant Valley Thursday and then planned to face Stroudsburg Friday and Dieruff Saturday to end a five game in six day stretch.
"We have been hitting the ball right at people," said Sugra. "We have been hitting the ball hard. But we have to be able to get the key hits when we need them."
