LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Tennis team is young

This season, Northampton's boys' tennis team simply won't be evaluated on the amount of wins and losses.

Instead, the Konkrete Kids will hope their club can be fully ripened by the end of the season. Until then, the Kids will weather any of the elements in their way.

"We're young," offered head coach Kim Davis, who is in his 15th season. "We really don't have a lot of experience right now. Our kids are playing really hard and they are hustling.

"Right now, our biggest problem is learning how to finish. We have been in matches with teams, but we can't close them out like we should."

This week, the Kids suffered a difficult 5-2 defeat to East Stroudsburg South, a match Davis believed his team should have won.

Earlier, they beat Pocono Mountain West and lost to Pleasant Valley. Before the season, Davis envisioned his team winning four matches. Last season, the Kids finished 8-8, a record that admittedly surprised Davis. They missed the district playoffs by one-hundredth of a point due to the power ranking system.

"I looked at our schedule and told the team that I honestly saw us winning four matches," said Davis. "We really came on late in the season last year. They really matured last season and had a great run.

"If we get more than four wins with this team, it will be the gravy on the filling. However, this group has shown the potential to do better."

Junior Tommy Reinhard, who played number three singles last season, is the team's number one singles player this spring.

Senior Carter Test is number two, and junior Nick Walker is number three. Both Test and Walker saw limited action last season.

Sophomore Dom Jackson is another returnee to the lineup.

Davis also has been excited about the play of a pair of doubles teams, both of who were 3-0 this week.

Juniors Ethan Schwartz and Kevin Trinkle comprise the number three team, and seniors Cory Croll and James Marsh are the Kids' number four team. Both Croll and Marsh are football players who are both first-year players.

"Ethan (Schwartz) and Kevin (Trinkle) have been doing well," said Davis. "Croll and Marsh have really done a great job. They both are still learning the game, but they are really hustling and doing well with their athletic skills."

Overall, the Kids have 19 players in the program, a slight drop off their usual 21 or 22 players in the program.

"Our lone drawback is that we have one freshman and one sophomore," stated Davis. "We're loaded with juniors and seniors. We do have a number of athletes from other sports.

"But we're working hard and we'll be OK. We're rebuilding and we'll do what we can."
