Kids look to adapt to some changes
The Northampton boys volleyball team had a very successful 2014 season. The Konkrete Kids qualified for the final Lehigh Valley Conference playoffs and the District 11 tournament, but fell short in both.
A lot of changes followed suit.
A couple of key players with a lot of experience and success for the program graduated, including LVC MVP Michael Callahan, and their head coach changed.
First year head coach David Faust knew there would be some early season bumps and bruises, but Northampton is making the right strides early in the young season.
"It's always going to be difficult losing a player like Mike Callahan, and some of the other guys we had last year," said Faust. "It was huge to have them around at practices and in games, which helped our younger guys learn last year. We lost a lot of our offense and defense with those seniors last year."
But, Tuesday night wasn't a night to get it rolling on track, as the Konkrete Kids traveled to Parkland high school and fell to the defending District champs 3-0 by scores of 25-13, 25-12, and 25-18.
Northampton seemed overmatched in the first two games, and could not get much offense going as the taller and faster Trojans could do anything they wanted in front of the net. But in game three, the Kids made fought back and made Parkland work for every point to secure their victory.
The team is hoping this is something to build on going forward.
"We're just trying to focus on the back-20, which is the front attack line," noted Faust. "We're pretty solid in the back end, but we need to focus on our offense. We're not gifted with a lot of height, so the name of our game is defense, and if we can play strong defense we will have our opportunities. It's tough to go up against a team like this, but as the season goes on, we'll get better."
