Kids lacrosse team has some work to do
Joe Engleby picked Easton to win the East Penn Conference this season and he got a good look at the Rovers during last week's 16-1 defeat.
For Engleby, scorelines may still be a secondary issue when it comes to developing the Northampton lacrosse program, which is entering their second year of varsity play in the area.
"We have many more players and the team's lacrosse IQ has increased dramatically," said Engleby. "With the addition of new coaches, we're able to teach the game more comprehensively and have moved several players to new roles and positions within the team. Many of our players have been playing on traveling teams and have increased their skills and are sharing them with the team."
Returning starters for the Kids this season include captain Nick Gutekunst (Jr., Middie), Vince Gonsalvez (So., Attack), Steve Kemmerer (Jr., D) and Joe Fehr (Jr., D).
Newcomers to the squad this year gives Engleby sophomore middie Anthony Belsky as a promising player, as well as the return of senior defender Ty Marinelli, who comes back to the program after taking a year off.
With a host of new coaches in the fold this year including Jace Shively (Offensive specialist), Kale Albert (Defensive specialist and JV Coach) and Logan Engleby (Defensive assistant coach), the Kids hope that the maturation process toward more competitive results can pay off over the course of the season.
"Our players work very hard and are absorbing new skills, sets and strategies eagerly," Engleby said. "We want to bring the freshman along and elevate our team's ability to compete with better teams, while still having brand new players throughout all grade levels."
