Softball excited to get on field
When will the Northampton softball team get to play its first game in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference?
That's a big question for Coach Kevin Mann and his girls.
The Konkrete Kids' first two scheduled games - one a nonleague affair - were postponed because of the weather and their third game was scheduled for Wednesday.
But Mann, in his second season as coach of the Kids, wasn't sure Monday if they'd play on Wednesday. The Kids were slated to take on Easton at home, but Northampton's field wasn't expected to be ready and the game might have been switched to Easton.
Northampton, which went 17-7 last year and wound up losing semifinal games in the Lehigh Valley Conference and District 11 tourneys, has been practicing hard - mostly indoors because of the wintry weather.
But, Mann says his girls "are ready and can't wait to get into action."
Mann expects to start nine batters (including a designated player) to give his sophomore pitchers (Gillian Muthard and Taylor Keeney) "a chance to focus on their mound duties."
Mann added, "We should be able to generate enough offense to back our pitchers and our defense appears to be solid."
Northampton's lineup includes five girls who were starters last year - juniors Auria Enright and Emily Schwartz and seniors Kendel Reed, Amber Saylor and Ali Reppert.
Also expected to see action are senior Sam Frey, sophomore Hallie Muffley and juniors Maura Moser, Diedra Person, Reily Piotrowski, Clara Wallace and Jolene Makovsky.
If the Easton game wasn't played, the Kids' first EPC game would be Friday against Dieruff at Allentown's Patriots Park. The Kids' first home game then would be a nonleague contest against Kutztown at 11 a.m. Saturday.
