Kids' Moran keeps wrestling streak alive

It's a streak that may not be well known, but one that Northampton's wrestling program certainly is proud of continuing.

The K-Kids left the PIAA championships in Hershey with another medalist, extending a 31-year streak of having state place-winners, following Dan Moran's fourth place finish at 113-pounds Saturday night at the Giant Center.

Moran was one of three wrestlers to make the trip to the 3A championships for the K-Kids, but was the only one to come away with hardware, as seniors Michael Scheetz (120) and Jason Kocher (220) came home empty handed to close out a mixed bag of results for the Kids on the state's grand stage.

"Danny getting a medal extends our streak of having a state medalist and that's a great medal for him," said head coach Seth Lisa. "On the other hand, you have three guys out here and to leave with only one [medal], it's kind of painful, but overall I think we did a good job."

Moran, who took second last year as a freshman, reached the semifinals against Franklin Regional's Devin Brown, but that's where his momentum stopped. Moran lost to the eventual state champion 8-0, but recovered with a 1-0 victory over Devin Schnupp of Warwick in the consolation round to push into the third place bout.

Unfortunately, Upper Perkiomen's Dustin Steffenino got the best of Moran during Saturday's championship round, scoring a reversal in the third period to steal a 6-5 win over Moran.

"It's a sour way to leave the tournament," said Lisa about Moran's defeat. "The goal is to win and take first. He wrestled a pretty good match in the semifinal and lost to the champ. He was in good position in this bout and in our eyes, he controlled the match and he got the winning takedown and just got a little high on top to get reversed. It's a tough way to end the season like that."

Michael Scheetz had a rough exit from the tournament, as he was disqualified in his opening bout of the tournament in 5:54 against Matt Marino of Garnet Valley for contact after the whistle.

That eliminated Scheetz from the tournament, leaving Moran and Kocher for the Kids to compete.

Kocher's time went fast as well, as he lost his first round bout to Andrew Boob of Selinsgrove 8-0 and then dropped his consolation bout by a 4-1 decision to Downingtown East's Billy McGinley to exit him from competition.

Despite the way things ended for Northampton, Moran will be back next year with a chance to grab his third straight state medal, one that Lisa hopes will improve upon this year's status.

"The goal is to go out there and give yourself the best opportunity to win," he said. "To train and give yourself the opportunity to be a champ. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't.

"He wrestled some of the best kids in the state and some of the best in the country out here. It's a very big accomplishment to get a medal out here."
