LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay Column

The American Club and Coplay Saengerbund, both with a long-standing bond with the community, are known as social clubs. The two clubs have another niche in the borough, that of bowling. Bowling continues to be popular at the lanes of both clubs, although perhaps not as hyped these days as are other sports or recreational activities. League and open bowling is big at the clubs, whether it be men or women.

And just across on Ruch Street is the West Coplay Maennerchor, the sounds of pins falling when a strike is rolled can be heard. Perhaps getting a strike at one of these local alleys, for many, is the equivalent of a dunk shot in basketball or hitting a home run in baseball.

Borough public works personnel picked up discarded Christmas trees Friday. The total number of trees picked up was 286, a bit down from last year, but still an increase overall from recent years, as artificial trees keep growing in popularity.

The trees are taken to the grounds in Weaversville, East Allen Township, where they are ground up for mulch. Borough personnel also take yard waste to the same site.

Binnie's, a popular takeout restaurant at Front and Chestnut streets, featuring hot dogs, is currently closed. Not to worry, the eatery is merely closed for renovations. There was concern due to the Coplay-Northampton Bridge shutdown scheduled for later this year that Binnie's might close permanently, but happily for its patrons, that is not the case.

Some in town may think it's too early to get organized to celebrate the borough's 150th birthday in 2019. A call by the borough, asking residents to come forward and serve on a planning committee has not received a single response.

In order to get things rolling, it does take early planning. Borough council members will serve on the committee, but are encouraging the participation of local residents as well.

A citizen's committee has in the past raised funds from residents to pay for the installation and replacement of the American flags that are flown on utility poles on patriotic holidays along Chestnut and Second streets. That task now goes to the borough, for replacing a limited number of flags as needed annually..
