Redmond earns all-conference at Moravian

Over the last three years, Eli Redmond has switched positions several times. He has gone back-and-forth between his two primary spots on the field.

During his junior year at Parkland in 2012, Redmond was one of the main running backs that gave a thunder and lightning one-two punch with Jarel Elder. In Redmond's senior season, head coach Jim Morgans felt that the team would be better if he moved Redmond to wide receiver, specifically in the slot where receivers use speed in the open field.

Then this summer, participating in his first fall camp for the Moravian College Greyhounds, Redmond started his campaign at wide out. But after one game, the coaching staff switched him back to tail back, and he thrived from there.

"Eli has great explosiveness when he touches the ball, and we saw that all season," Greyhound head coach Jeff Pukszyn said in a statement. "Due to an injury, we had to move him to running back where he hadn't played in a couple of years, and he did a great job."

Even with these movements in his position, one consistent attribute kept the Moravian freshman on the field - his speed.

He took the opening kickoff of the second game of the year versus McDaniel 100 yards for a touchdown to set the Moravian and Centennial record for longest kickoff return. He also led the Greyhounds this fall with 14 plays of more than 20 yards including 10 rushing attempts and four kickoff returns.

On the ground, Redmond had two games of over 100 yards; 109 yards in a win against McDaniel College on September 13th, and 113 yards in a victory over Gettysburg on November 1.

Redmond was recently named to the All-Conference Second Team as a return specialist.

"I was happy to come in as a freshman and contribute right away," Redmond said. "That showed that the coaches had trust in me. I worked hard in the offseason because I knew the players were going to be stronger and faster than in high school."

One of Moravian's assistant coaches was a familiar face for Redmond, and helped him ease his way into the college game. Tim McGorry, who was Parkland's offensive coordinator before taking his current position at Moravian in 2012, guided the freshman on the new scheme and plays he had to learn.

It wasn't just adjusting to a higher level of play on the gridiron, but more academic responsibilities came with the territory of being a college student-athlete.

"My first semester was all about time management," said Redmond. "It was a lot different than in high school when you are told what is going to happen. We have to set our own schedule and make sure that we get our work done around practices, meetings and games. I would spend late nights in the library getting homework done."

The Greyhounds finished 5-5 in 2014. Redmond looks to continue to be a big factor in an ever-improving Moravian football program.

"I enjoyed the season this year," said Redmond. "We went 5-5, but that's three more wins than they had last year. The players and coaches are all buying into working hard and improving each year. We get back to work on January 19 with weight lifting four days a week, and speed training as well."
