Kids Hetrick falls in Holiday Classic final
It happened in a split second and the end result isn't what Todd Hetrick was hoping for in the 132-pound finals of the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic Monday night at Liberty's Memorial Gymnasium.
With 1.7 seconds left in overtime, Wyoming Seminary's Johnny Busiello earned the only points of the match with a takedown after a scramble to stop Hetrick's chances of coming home with a gold medal in a 2-0 win.
In all, Northampton brought home four medalists from the competition with Hetrick leading the charge with a silver medal performance.
Still, the end result was a bit disheartening for the Northampton senior.
"He was scrambling off my shots and I just couldn't get anything to finish," Hetrick said of the loss to Busiello. "I think it was a pretty even match. I know that I can wrestle with anybody. I just have to keep working hard to get better."
Logan Ninos (106), Dan Moran (113) and Cade Moisey (160) each took home medals as well for the K-Kids, who finished 10th in the team standings with 95 points.
"We came in this tournament a little short-handed, but we hoped that we could finish in the top-10," said head coach Seth Lisa. "Overall, I think we did a good job by having four place winners, as well as three or four other guys that were just short of making the medal round."
Moran came off his Beast of the East finals performance and ended up taking third following a 7-2 decision over Jack David of West Scranton in the consolation finals. Moran lost in the semifinals to Warwick's Devon Schnupp by a 3-2 score to keep him out of the finals.
"I think we're always disappointed when you see any of your kids have tough losses," said Lisa. "He has high expectations for himself, especially after being in the finals at Beast. He expected to be in the finals and it didn't work out."
Ninos finished in seventh after pinning Freedom's Andrew Evans in 2:11 in the consolation round. Moisey ended up taking fourth following a 5-2 defeat to Hunter Harner of Tri-Valley.
The Kids move forward with a match against a tough Phillipsburg squad this Saturday at home.
