Girls defeat Emmaus
One more win, then another loss is the tale for the Northampton girls' basketball team this week.
The Konkrete Kids edged Emmaus 46-43 last Tuesday in an EPC Skyline Division game, then traveled to State College Monday only to lose in overtime to Burrell 55-53.
The K-Kids got their EPC win when Sophia Eckroth hit two foul shots with just seconds remaining and had to withstand a desperation three-point attempt at the buzzer. The win gave Northampton a 2-3 EPC record as Eckroth finished with14 points and Aja Blount added another 13.
But, alas, the Kids fell to Burrell, a District 7 team, in the Kiwanis Holiday Tournament at State College and dropped into the consolation game Tuesday against either State College of North Schuylkill.
The Kids, 2-6 overall, jumped to a 13-7 lead, but Burrell ran off 11 straight points in the final two minutes of the first period for an 18-13 lead.
Burrell's final three points came on a half court desperation shot by Sydney Bordonero, a Division One recruit.
The Kids kept it close and trailed 30-26 at halftime. Eckroth, who scored two points in the first half, came up big after the break and scored 11 points in the third quarter as Northampton went in front 40-36.
With Northampton up 49-47 in the final minute, a Konkrete Kid was fouled and she missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and Bordonero, who finished with 30 points, got the rebound and went all the way down court to tie it at 49.
The overtime was "frustrating" to Coach Jeff Jacksits as the Kids committed "too many turnovers from the fourth quarter on."
Blount was Northampton's top scorer with 27 points on 10 field goals and 7-for-7 from the foul line. Eckroth had 13 and Lauren Sterner and Giovanna Martinez had the other 13,
Burrell had only three girls scoring with Bordonero getting 30 and Natalie Meyers scoring 13 and Eliza Oswalt 12.
Following Northampton's Tuesday consolation game, the Kids return to EPC action Friday at Whitehall before entertaining Freedom on Tuesday and visiting Dieruff on Friday.
