Retired Parkland teacher receives volunteer of the year

Retired Parkland school teacher Barbara Campbell was awarded the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees volunteer of the Year Award Sept. 15 at the Iron Lakes Country Club, South Whitehall.

Campbell, who taught grades two through six, and fifth grade at Parkway Manor Elementary School, retired in 2007.

She is the co-chair of the Social Service Honor Memorial Fund Committee for PASR.

Campbell is the president of the Parkland Garden Club, co-chair of the garden tour committee, chair of the program committee.

She also serves on the horticulture therapy committee, teaching area youth gardening and conservation.

In addition, Campbell is a member of the board of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania.

Campbell heads the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl national poster campaign and heads the state campaign and is the state chairperson for the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl programs.

For more than 16 years, she has been an active leader for People to People, a youth travel organization for which she and husband, Tom, have led students on trips around the world.

Campbell, who graduated from Slatington High School and received Bachelor and Master degrees from the former Kutztown State College, now Kutztown University, volunteers regularly at Parkway Manor Elementary School.

She also teaches pre-school Bible study at her church.

Campbell and her husband, who have been married 42 years, have a daughter Jennifer.

The couple in Lower Macungie Township.

In addition to being named Volunteer of the Year, she received a gift card for Youell's Restaurant and a $25 donation made to the Social Service Memorial Honor Fund in her name.

Campbell also received congratulatory citations from Gov. Tom Corbett, State Senator Pat Browne, R-16th, State Rep. Ryan Mackenzie, R-134th, Congressman Charlie Dent, R-15th, and Senator Pat Toomey.
