Trojans win another summer crown

If the summer basketball circuit was a prelude to what the actual winter season will bring, the Parkland boys basketball team should have a long and successful season in 2014-15.

Just a week after the Trojans went unbeaten on their way to a championship at the Stellar Catch A Rising Star tournament, Parkland won every game on its way to a third consecutive Sportsfest A-town Throwdown title last weekend at Cedar Beach Park. It completed a sweep of the two elite summer tournaments held at the Allentown courts, going 6-0.

"The summer is a really good gauge of what to expect in the winter, but yet summer is still a different game," said head coach Andy Stephens. "So, we'll feel confident coming out of the summer, but we won't take anything for granted. We still know we need to get a lot better and this team has some very high goals."

The Trojans showed that the summer titles weren't a fluke, and that they are a legitimate contender for a third straight District 11 title this winter.

Missing key players in some games because of other commitments, Parkland used its depth to overcome any obstacle.

All-Tournament team member Jack Dreisbach and tournament MVP Justin Jones, one of two seniors, helped to guide the Trojans to a perfect record and another championship.

Parkland won its group in pool play by defeating Notre Dame (Green Pond), 60-32, Warren Hills, 49-42, and Octorara, 78-45. There was a balanced scoring attack in each of the three games, as Kenny Yeboah tallied 23 points against Octorara and Jones netted 19 versus Warren Hills.

Dreisbach notched a game-high 26 points in a Sunday win over Pocono Mountain West. Jones and Kyle Stout each had 13 in a quarterfinal victory over Delaware Valley Charter, and Sam Iorio added 16 in a win over defending Class AA state champ Constitution in the semifinals.

The Trojans showed their depth and versatility, and finished off strong with a dominating 70-53 victory against Allen in the championship game where Stout scored 25 points.

But it was the senior Jones who stole the show over the weekend, winning MVP honors.

"Winning the MVP feels great, but without my teammates I couldn't have won this," Jones said. "I wanted to do whatever I can to help my team win."

With the options that the Trojans showed in these two tournaments, and all throughout the summer league, they will continue to dominate the landscape of District 11 this coming winter.

Parkland is also undefeated in the Stellar Summer League at Cedar Beach.
