Missed opportunities lead to loss Stellar girls final

The happy ending to the Stellar Catch A Rising Star Basketball Tournament didn't come to fruition for the Parkland girls basketball. The Lady Trojans went unbeaten for nearly all of last weekend, except for the one that mattered most.

A couple of missed opportunities proved vital as the Trojans fell to Boyertown 23-22 in overtime of the final of the Stellar Tournament last weekend at Cedar Beach Park in Allentown, ending a successful weekend.

"You always want to win it for the seniors," said head coach Wes Spence. "But you also want to see improvement and execution until the end. I wanted the older girls to gel with the younger girls, and that happened."

Spence was able to get contributions from multiple players, including starters Erica and Erin Bross, Aubrey Beidelman, Nadine Ewald and Regan Allsop.

The Trojans stormed through their opening games, with double-digit wins over Southern Lehigh (51-27) and Palisades (43-25) on Sunday before falling to Boyertown in the championship game. Alexis Koder tallied 12 points in the win versus the Spartans, and Ewald notched 10 against the Pirates.

Parkland also added double digit wins over Catasauqua on Friday night and Owen J. Roberts on Saturday afternoon.

But against Boyertown, it was a different story.

Down four with five minutes left, the Trojans went on a run, putting them up four with a minute to go. But a couple of missed free throws gave the Bears an opportunity to come back, and they tied the game to take it into overtime.

In the extra period, neither team connected on a field goal, but Boyertown made one more free throw than Parkland, and took home the title.

"Boyertown had a lot more size than other teams that we faced," said Spence. "The girls played hard and were determined to win, but when it came down to it we didn't shoot as well as we did in other games."

It was still a successful run in the tournament, and with a couple of days to reflect, Parkland will look to bounce back and win another SportsFest tournament this weekend. The Trojans will begin play on Friday night against Palmerton.
