LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Coplay column

The skies were dark over Coplay this Fourth of July holiday.

The fireworks which lit up the sky for the past 12 years, attracting crowds in the thousands, were sadly missing this year.

While some remain hopeful the pyrotechnics will return in 2015, no definite action has been taken.

Simply put, the fireworks, run by Sandy and Gene Gyecsek, cost the committee more than $10,000. The event was a volunteer effort, not a borough effort. The borough donated $500 to the program.

Organizations in town, such as the Coplay Lions, Coplay Recreation & Welfare and others, contributed to the display.

The American Club of Coplay's parking lot on Cherry Street was open to the public for a fee, raising $800 to cover the expenses. Although fundraisers were held such as breakfasts and pizza sales, they hardly put a dent in the overall expenses.

Flyers mailed out to residents did help. Volunteers donated money throughout the evening as well. Also, in the last year or so, the fireworks company that sponsored the display did not make a profit.
