Twp. considers tot lot

The Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners discussed the possibility of establishing a tot lot or minipark at the Fox Hollow residential development in North Coplay at its June 9 meeting.

The recreational area could also serve the neighboring homes.

Commissioner Gerard Palagonia said Fox Hollow, a cluster of 86 homes, was built in the 1990s, but that no recreational area was set aside or funded.

Palagonia said the children go to Coplay to use a basketball court and a playground at the park.

The other alternative is to walk farther to the recreational site in lower Cementon, but walking on the road is dangerous for children.

When asked where such a recreational site could be developed at Fox Hollow, Palagonia said perhaps Lafarge Cement Company.

It was suggested land across from Fox Hollow could be obtained for the project.

Palagonia said swings, benches and play equipment could be installed.

Commissioners President Linda Snyder said while no commitment could be made at the meeting, the township can delve further into providing a recreation area at Fox Hollow.

Commissioners Vice President Philip Ginder said the township should look into the records when the recreation commission obtained funds for recreation from development projects. Ginder wants to see where and how much funding went into Cementon.

Deputy Mayor Jack Meyers said the account is down to about $200,000 since new development in recent years stalled.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. reported the township's three swimming pools opened Saturday for the summer.

Hozza said the pools are opening later because schools were open longer than usual due to snow days.
