CL/MVC wins Deppe Classic
In an all-star game, most people probably expect a heavy explosion of offense.
And while that was the case for one team at the recent Howard Deppe All-Star Classic, it was the dominant outing of the Colonial League and Mountain Valley Conference's pitching staff that stole the show.
Following a first inning that produced a 2-2 tie, the Lavender Team's (Colonial League/MVC) quintet of pitchers allowed just four hits and one run the rest of the way to drop the Orange Team (composed of players from the Lehigh Valley Conference), 11-3 on Saturday, June 7, at Limeport's Fegley Stadium.
Salisbury's Justin Aungst, who earned the win, found himself right in the middle of that rotation. He struck out five batters in the third and fourth innings while allowing just one hit.
The Orange Team's staff kept it within striking distance all game. Parkland's Gabe Mosser pitched the third and fourth innings. Following a one-two-three third with three strikeouts, Mosser allowed a hit, a walk and two runs (one earned) after striking out the first two in the fourth.
"It's nice to know what they think while they play the game," Mosser said of playing with his LVC teammates. "It's a good time."
Mosser went 2-for-2 with a run scored. Parkland's Hudson Rabenold walked in his lone plate appearance, and Zach Miller (0-for-1) finished second in the Frank Yelinko Hitting Competition prior to the game with 29 points.
After Catasauqua's Zach Bradley allowed two runs in the first, he pitched a one-two-three inning in the second to get the pitching spectacle started. It was the first of four one-two-three frames for the Orange Team.
Pen Argyl's Devon Labarre allowed one hit and struck out four in two innings. Palmerton's also Nick Frey pitched two hitless innings. Northern Lehigh's Matt Egan closed out the ninth.
Zachary Talmadge (Nazareth) brought home Emmaus' Jason Fatzinger (Emmaus), and Mosser scored on a passed ball in the first that gave Orange a 2-0 lead.
The Lavender Team responded as Nicholas Horinko (Wilson) scored on a throwing error, and Catasauqua's Tyler Correll connected on a single that scored Palmerton's Nick Frey in the fourth to give Lavender a 4-2 advantage.
While the Lavender Team provided much of the fireworks on the field, the game went beyond just the final score. It was an opportunity for the best players to compete against one another on the brightest stage.
"It's a good time," Mosser said. "It's just all about fun."
