Trojan alumni lead BU to big season
Last season, the Bloomsburg University baseball program missed out on the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference playoffs with a sub .500 record. But a mixture of youth and experience, and the Parkland baseball feeder program, has put the Huskies (28-18 overall, 20-8 PSAC) back into the league playoffs.
Senior pitcher Casey Cooperman, sophomore pitcher Matt Hurd and freshman catcher Damin Muth have made their marks on the 2014 season.
Cooperman and Muth, in particular, have enjoyed stellar campaigns. This week the two former Trojans were named to the All-PSAC team. Muth was named the PSAC East freshman of the year and also found himself on the All-PSAC East second team. Cooperman was named to the first team.
Having his best season in a Husky uniform thus far, Cooperman has taken the initiative to be the senior leader and set an example to his team. This season he has posted a 6-4 record with a 1.64 ERA in 11 starts. Bloomsburg's 20 PSAC East wins are a school record, and the 28 overall wins is good for third in team history.
"I think that I am getting older and more experienced and that is helping me pitch better," said Cooperman. "The game hasn't changed, I've just become smarter on the mound from all of my game experience."
That experience has helped him become one of the most successful pitchers in Bloomsburg history. Currently, he ranks first all-time in innings pitched (235.1), third in complete games (15) and in wins (17), and is fifth in strikeouts (156).
His complete game shutout at East Stroudsburg earlier this month gave the Huskies a ton of momentum, earning a four-game home-and-home split against East Stroudsburg, the defending PSAC champions.
"It was a big split for us," said Cooperman. "It was huge because they are a great team. We always say that we want to sweep at home and split on the road, but that was still a good split for us. So far this year, we've had no series losses."
Muth has also broken out in a good way, adjusting to the college game rather quickly. The freshman catcher led the Huskies in batting average (.394), on-base percentage (.500), slugging percentage (.520), OPS (1.020) and RBI (29), mostly batting as the designated hitter.
Hurd earned a victory in a win at Clarion earlier this month, pitching two scoreless innings.
Bloomsburg will now look to advance into the conference playoffs, which begins this weekend.
