Weight limit affects Cementon Bridge
The Cementon and Northampton bridge has a 25-ton and 30-ton combination weight limit imposed by PennDOT.
Although there is no around-the-clock police patrol monitoring trucks that exceed the weight limits crossing over the bridge, Whitehall Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said police keep a watchful eye for violators that exceed the 25-ton limit.
"There was a truck driver who was fined substantially for having his overweight truck cross the bridge," Hozza said.
The Northampton Police Department have been seen parked on the borough's side of the bridge.
Whitehall has a police weight team that monitors truck infractions. State police also have jurisdiction over the area as the roads and bridge are state owned.
Hozza does not expect to see the weight restrictions eased until a new bridge is built. No timetable has been released for completion of the project. The major project will not take place until the Coplay-Northampton Bridge is completed.
"So far, so good," Hozza said in regard to PennDot's commitment to replace the Cementon Bridge. "It is on the 22 year TIP (Transportation Improvement Plan)."
Whitehall hopes PennDOT will rollout a replacement schedule for the new bridge early in the 12 year cycle.
"It hurts everybody," Hozza said of the truck weight limit restrictions.
Hozza said Lafarge Cement and the township is affected.
Several months ago a group of people from various backgrounds headed by the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce met on the Whitehall side of the bridge, pushing for the replacement. Business, elected officials, Cetronia Ambulance Corps and county and local officials, along with Lafarge executives explained the need for prompt action regarding the bridge replacement.
