Scouts propose pet food bank
A local Girl Scout troop, based at Trinity United Church of Christ, is considering having a food bank for pets that would operate from Coplay Recreation and Welfare Association's food bank, quartered in the basement of borough hall. The association board said it needs specific information on the request before its members make a decision on the matter. The information sought includes the dates and times when its food bank would be turned over for such a project, adult supervision, eligibility and other particulars.

With no organizations conducting food drives during the winter, Coplay Recreation and Welfare Association's food bank shelves are not bare, but staples such as canned and boxed food donations are welcome. Tuna fish, boxed cereals, peanut butter and other donated items could buff up the food bank's inventory. Association directors Louise and Ray Krenn, who supervise the food bank, are preparing plans to put together an Easter meal for food bank clients who will take home a ham and other food items so they can cook a holiday dinner for their family.

The lines of vehicles waiting to get to the gas pumps at the Giant station have been longer recently because the gas price is low. In fact, lines are at the highest they have been for quite some time. The waiting lines exist because of the Giant Food rewards program. The operation had been operating much smoother for months than previously when vehicles were on Cherry Street. Now vehicles are stacked on the gas station blacktop with guidance from a Giant employee.
How many remember when the property for decades housed Lincoln Elementary School?

Looking for a summer job? How about working for the Coplay Public Works Department? The department will hire a person, 18 or older, with a valid driver's license. The individual will cut grass, help pick up garbage and perform other miscellaneous tasks.
Lifeguards are also being recruited. Applicants, young men and women, usually high school and college students, must have a current CPR, first aid and lifeguard certification before the parkway pool opening in mid-June. Working papers are required for those under 18. For those over 18, child abuse and criminal history clearances are required.

If you have an old pair of eyeglasses you are no longer wearing, then consider donating them to Coplay Lions Club. The organization has a bright painted receptacle outside the Coplay Public Library, Fifth and Center streets, to dispose of the eyewear.
Coplay American Legion Post 426 has a receptacle outside the Legion on South Second Street where the public can dispose of their worn, tattered and no longer usable American flags. The flags are then burned in May in a ritual with other Legion posts participating at the Hokendauqua American Legion complex.
