Finnegan's Wake
The Fullerton Fire Company held Finnegan's Wake in an annual rite, observing St. Patrick's Day.
An overflow crowd attended the event Saturday.
The social hall was decked out in green, white and orange pennants and a huge Irish flag.
The crowd, mostly attired in green, wore green hats, fake beards, green beads and lots of shamrocks.
Many orders of traditional corn beef, potatoes and cabbage platters and bread kept the kitchen crew busy.
A small parade, held indoors, went up and down the aisles of the ballroom floor and then to the bar area, where the bandstand is located.
Celtic United, bagpipe performers from Wind Gap, led the parade playing Irish songs such as "Martydon Waters," "Abide with Me" and "Danny Boy." The group continued playing after the wake was held.
The main attraction was "Finnegan" in the coffin, sporting dark sunglasses, folded hands holding plastic white lilles in the area of the bandstand. Roy Ferguson played the role of the deceased Finnegan.
Scott Schmoyer, donning a dark brown robe and hood, played the role of the "Drunk Monk." Warren Bender caught the attention and laughs of the crowd playing the "Grieving Widow." Darlene Bender, wearing special attire, was the "Leprechaun."
Many present strolled up to the coffin, some taking pictures and others telling jokes, as they attempted to win a prize by causing "Finnegan" to break out in a smile. However, Ferguson remained stoic most of the time.
Club steward Eric Thompson said he was pleased with the turnout, but added, "We could have had a few more."
Some patrons at tables enjoyed themselves, singing songs with an Irish flavor and accent.
