Former Mulligan's site gets a look

The decision to open the Whitehall Township-owned golf driving range and mini-golf center this year is up in the air. The township didn't receive interest from anyone, when it sought proposals to lease the facility.

The township has made repairs and had other work done at the facility.

Township Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. confirmed there are ongoing discussions with an individual regarding a possible lease for the grounds.

Hozza said the township is also exploring other uses of the property. Hozza would not disclose what the possible use of the grounds may be in the future. The Board of Commissioners also have a stake in what takes place at the facility.

At the Feb. 10 Whitehall Township Commissioners' meeting, Hozza was questioned about the property by Comissioner Gerard Palagonia.

He said a respected businessman is interested in purchasing or leasing the Range Road tract for commercial recreation. Hozza suggested it could be a venue for lacrosse, soccer, etc.

The golf range, last operated as Mulligan's, did not operate in 2013. The facility is across from the township recycling center on Range Road.

A large for-sale sign, noting the land is suitable for commercial use, was erected at the intersection of Eberhart and Range roads.

Several years back, a vacant wooded tract south of the golf range was proposed as a possible site for a township recreation center. A committee was formed by then-township executive Glenn Solt. However the proposal never materialized, as a lack of strong public support and fiscal concerns doomed the effort.
