Snacks are back.

The Coplay Public Library will sell crackers, cookies and small candies with an eye toward possibly expanding the sale of snacks in the future.

In October 2013, the board voted to discontinue selling snacks due to concerns that unsold and outdated food cut too far into profits.

Board member Joan Witco, who opposed cutting snacks, was asked to chair a fundraising committee which would come up with ideas for income for the cash-strapped library.

She presented a list of fundraisers and also asked that snacks return. Instead of the extensive selection that had been offered previously, Witco said the library would offer crackers, cookies and small candies.

"Maybe later on in the summer, we would add more and more snacks," said Witco.

When asked if someone would watch expiration dates, Witco said yes, and explained the committee would start by purchasing only small quantities.

"We want to see what moves, what doesn't move," she said.

Witco said the fundraising committee would track which items sell and which don't so better purchasing decisions can be made in the future.

The board approved the return of snacks along with several other fundraisers, including the sale of Coplay Sports lottery calendars in January, a soup sale in February, a Mardi Gras in March and a book sale in April.

Other items the committee is working on include dining fundraisers at the Blue Monkey and Samuel Owens, a little shoppers shop, gift wrapping next Christmas, Christmas in July, a fun day and basket social/Chinese auctions. The committee will seek approval for these events at a later date, after more of the planning work is done.

"The only thing I'm concerned about is you control it," said board member Charles Sodl.
