The Whitehall-Coplay School District has a new business manager.

At the meeting Dec. 9, the school board appointed J. Michael Malay Jr. for a term running through Dec. 8, 2018. Malay has 12 years experience working with other school districts, said Superintendent John W. Corby.

"Thank you for this opportunity. I look forward to coming in and doing a lot of great things," Malay said.

Corby then recognized Business Manager Robert Strauss.

"A business manager can make or break a district," Corby said. "You [Strauss] left this district in a great place and we appreciate the job you've done. We can't thank you enough."

"It's been difficult, but it's been an honor and privilege to work in this district," Strauss said. "I've worked for many school boards and this one focused on the education of the children. I hope I've made a difference in my tenure."

Also during the meeting, the board was treated to a performance by the Whitehall High School Chorale.

As Director D. Andrew Borghesani conducted, the chorale performed Christmas songs such as "Gloria" and "Angel Medley."

The chorale differs from the chorus as the students are selected through auditions. This allows the group to sing more advanced pieces, according to Borghesani.

"This is always something we look forward to," Corby said. "Thank you for coming."

At the school board's reorganization meeting Dec. 3, the board elected Tina Koren as school board president, with all nine members voting in favor, according to the meeting minutes.

The document also states the board elected Robert Kolb as vice president, with all board members voting in favor.

Also, according to the minutes, the board appointed Rebecca Hoernle as a chemistry teacher at the high school. The board recognized Hoernle at its Dec. 9 meeting.
