The Parkland Garden Club met recently at Jordan Lutheran Church, Orefield, for a presentation by Dan Kunkle, director of the Lehigh Gap Nature Center, Slatington.

"What you plant in your garden makes a difference," Kunkle told garden club members. "The right plants attract what is good for the garden.

Birds and buttelflies now frequent the nature center on land formerly contaminated by chemicals from a zinc company in Palmeton.

Prairie Warblers are common birds seen in the nature center gardens.

"During the years 2010-12 amazing growth of gardens took place at the nature center," Kunkle said. "Rare native plants are intentionally planted at the gap."

Other ideas Kunkle gave to the members included fencing to help native wildlife, and planting attractive window boxes with native plants.
