Got ideas for parks and recreation in Coplay?

If so, the borough parks and recreation board wants to hear from you.

The board will meet 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 20, in council chambers, 98 S. Fourth St. The public is invited.

Coplay Borough Councilman Steve Burker is attempting to revive the borough parks and recreation board, which has been inactive for about two years. At an informal public meeting Oct. 7, officials and residents came up with a list of parks and recreational facilities in need of repair or refurbishing.

Burker organized the meeting after residents approached him about park facilities which they described as an "eyesore," he said.

"Right now we don't have the greatest package to sell," said Burker. "We have to try to stop the bleeding."

Those who attended the Oct. 7 meeting agreed the prospective board members and public should meet again Oct. 21. However, only one of the actual parks and rec board members – Bill Loy – showed up.

"We want the people who aren't going to quit half way through," said Burker Oct. 21.

Officially the board, established by borough ordinance, includes Loy as chairman, Christine Leitgeb, Seth Hoderewski, Jocelyn Wedge and Ron Helman, who was appointed to the board by council in October.

Leitgeb, Hoderewski and Helman attended the Oct. 7 meeting.

In addition to Loy, those attending the Oct. 21 meeting were Burker and Councilmen Carl Luckenbach and Joseph Groller, along with resident Frank Reichl and Coplay Sports Vice President Chris Schmidt. They expressed frustration about the fact Loy was the only parks and rec board member to attend.

The group reaffirmed its interest in refurbishing the basketball and tennis courts located behind the fire station on Cherry Street and making repairs and improvements to Sammy Balliet Stadium.

The group is interested in hearing other ideas from members of the public. Burker said a person need not be a board member in order to contribute. Everyone is welcome.
