Creighton given another term

Republican Commissioner Tom Creighton of Lynn Township has received another four-year term on the Lehigh County Board of Commissioners representing District 1.

Voters gave Creighton 5,843 votes of the total 10,253 cast, earning him 57 percent of the total, according to unofficial Lehigh County Voter Registration numbers.

Democrat Bill Leiner Jr. of Coplay garnered an unofficial 4,410 votes, 43 percent, on Tuesday.

Creighton emailed The Press Wednesday morning with comments on the election results.

"I would just like to thank all of the people who supported me and all the hard work they did to help me get elected," Creighton wrote. "I am also very happy I got to meet so many good quality people who care very much about Lehigh County."

Leiner also emailed a post-election comment to The Press Wednesday morning.

"Yesterday the voters in District 1 of Lehigh County clearly demonstrated that DIstrict 1 is a safe Republican seat. My team and County Democrats ran a campaign that included many of the ingredients to win.

"We ran an honest, competent effort that I am proud to be associated.

"I congratulate Mr. Creighton on his victory. It was my honor to meet him during this electoral season. He is a good, decent guy. I have been in many elections. The benefit of running is one gets to meet many good people.

"I am thankful for that and I thank my team for their outstanding efforts."

During the campaign, Creighton said most important issue in this election was who would vote for higher taxes and bigger county government.

A self-described fiscal conservative, Creighton said he would vote to decrease the size of government.

District 1 covers the boroughs of Coplay and Slatington, and in Heidelberg, Lowhill, Lynn, North Whitehall, Washington, Weisenberg and Whitehall townships.
