A skateboard park and a technology lab may not seem logical recipients of arts awards.

"This group of recipients are people who are probably the greatest diversity of recipients ever," said Barbara Faust at the annual Bethlehem Fine Arts Commission (BFAC) "Tribute to the Arts" 23rd annual reception Sept. 17, Atelier Dualis, 91 W. Broad St., Bethlehem.

"I believe they are making exceptional things happening all over Bethlehem," said Mary Mulder, awards chairman.

Receiving BFAC grant awards were the Moravian College spring writing workshop and Satori, announced Don Spieth.

Receiving Tribute awards were Jennifer Wescoe, theater arts teacher-director, Freedom HS, Bethlehem Area School District; Jeffrey Boerner, Managing Director, and Cliff Buckner, Engineering Consultant, Fab Lab, Fowler Southside Campus, Northampton Community College, Bethlehem; and Andy Po, owner, Homebase Skateshop, Bethlehem.

"Andy [Po] has managed to do something concrete and abstract," Faust said of Po's spearheading of the Skateplaza that opened in 2010 along Bethlehem's South Bethlehem Greenway.

"We see skateboarding as a culture, as an art form," Po said. "Art and music they're all interwoven in the skateboarding community."

"I have so much fun. They come in [to the Fab Lab] with something in their heads and I help them make it," Buckner said.

"Little miracles happen every day, but little things are big in high school," Wescoe said.

The 2013 Purchase Prize of "Just Above the Crest," a digital photo by Ralph Hlavacek of Lebanon shown at the 48th annual Bethlehem Fine Art and Craft Show in May, was presented by Sandy Gillen, Chair, BFAC Fine Arts Show Committee, to Bethlehem Mayor John Callahan.

"I've had the privilege of being part of 10 of the 23 [years of the BFAC awards]," said Callahan.

This was the last BFAC awards event for Callahan as Bethlehem mayor. He concludes his term this year. The art work is displayed at City Hall.

A new BFAC logo, designed by Gillen, was unveiled.

In closing remarks, Deni Thurman-Eyer, BFAC chair, noted other BFAC venues and events, including the City Center Sculpture Garden concert series and Rotunda art exhibits.
