A recently removed structure located at Third and Grape streets has caught the attention of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PDEP).

PDEP alleges the structure, which was moved so the Grape Street intersection could be widened, is fraught with asbestos.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. informed the Board of Commissioners last Monday of the problem.

"The contractor, as alleged by the EPA, failed to contain asbestos on the property, and a violation notice has been issued," Hozza said.

The commissioners were told it could take several months to resolve the issue. The township indicated it is withholding final payment to the contractor until the issue is resolved.

Widening of the intersection is not scheduled to occur until 2014.

The building that was demolished years ago served as a residence and housed a business before that.
