Field hockey looks to get through tough stretch
With a "Senior Day" looming Saturday, Northampton's field hockey team was trying to weather a difficult three-game stretch this week.
The Konkrete Kids began their latest schedule with a 2-0 win over Easton - the Kids' fifth shutout during a seven-game win streak.
But, Coach Kelly Backenstoe's Kids ran into a buzz saw last Saturday as unbeaten Stroudsburg (the top team in the Mountain Valley Conference) downed Northampton 3-1.
Jennifer Kukowski scored twice for the Mountaineers (13-0) and Brittany Thurton added the clincher even though Northampton outshot Stroudsburg (8-6) and outplayed the Mountaineers for the most part with 17 corners to 14.
Senior co-captain Kate Fehnel scored Northampton's lone goal on a corner play as the final horn sounded to avoid a shutout.
"We had plenty of chances and played with a lot of effort and tenacity" said Backenstoe.
Tuesday, the Kids played a night Lehigh Valley Conference game at Liberty and Northampton then played unbeaten LVC leader Emmaus Wednesday.
The Kids lost at Liberty 2-1 as the Hurricanes' Taylor Kane knocked home a penalty stroke with seven minutes left in the game.
Megan Wiest had tied the score at 1-1 earlier in the second half with Fehnel gettomg the assist on a corner play.
"We dominated the game and had plenty of opportunities. We need to score more than one goal. We must regroup for Emmaus," said Backenstoe, whose team's record fell to 8-2 in the LVC and 10-3 overall.
Nine seniors will be honored at Saturday's 3:30 p.m. game with cocaptains Fehnel and Bri Dalton leading the way. Other seniors who supplied leadership to the younger team members are Taylor Kerbacher, Autumn Klucsarits, Shannon Knipe, Kate Minnich, Victoroia Pizzoferrato, Madison Gogel and Ashley Schell.
For the year, junior Wiest has 12 goals and three assists and junior Rachel Heimbach has 11 goals and four assists. Fehnel is next with seven goals and 10 assists, while nine other Kids contributed to scoring.
After the game with Whitehall Saturday, Northampton closes regular-season play with an LVC game at Parkland Tuesday and another LVC game at home Thursday with Nazareth and a nonleague fame at home Friday against Pocono Mountain East from the MVC.
