Kids go 2-1 in SportsFest boys tourney

While the goal in the SportsFest "A-town Throwdown" boys basketball tournament is to try and advance to the Round of 16, there's more to it than just wins and losses for head coach Coy Stampone.

That's why the second-year coach didn't hesitate to play the Konkrete Kids' Saturday afternoon game against Constitution, which showed up half an hour late to the tournament. The opportunity to play teams from out of the area would only benefit them moving forward.

In their three games in pool play, Northampton went 2-1, capturing victories over Hempfield and Blue Mountain, while falling to Constitution.

"It's not necessarily about the wins and losses all the time," said Stampone. "It's understanding what your weakness are and knowing what we have to work on for the regular season."

Piefka Stonewall's 16 points helped the Konkrete Kids to a 10-point victory over Hempfield on Thursday. Northampton led by double-digits for a good portion of the contest, before Hempfield made a late spurt that fell just short of a comeback.

That's one of those teaching moments Stampone can use during this summer.

"Against Hempfield we had a 16-point lead and, again, pressure hurt us," said Stampone. "They cut it down to five and we brought it back up to 10."

Constitution, the eventual runner-up to champion Parkland, proved to be too much for the Konkrete Kids, despite having just six guys. Their defense is what gave Northampton problems often.

"They're pressure was really tough on us," said Stampone. "And we just could not get into our sets or make it a half-court game. Their defense is their offense, and that's what killed us."

The Kids responded with a dominant victory over Blue Mountain, which stationed them at 2-1. Because of a point-differential system, the Konkrete Kids hoped their margin would be enough to advance into the Round of 16. It turns out the loss to Constitution had enough of an impact to keep them out of the final single-elimination bracket for a chance at a championship.

"The Constitution game, if we could've kept that within 10, it would've been a good possibility that we could've maybe advanced to the Sweet 16. But we were 2-1, and so were a lot of other teams at 2-1."

The junior varsity team went 1-2 at SportsFest, and the Northampton's team advanced to the quarterfinals of the Riser's tournament.

On the girls side, the Konkrete Kids had a bye in the first-round that stationed them into play on Saturday morning against Palisades. After falling to Palisades, 34-29, the Northampton faced another Colonial League team in Saucon Valley, which ended Northampton's run with a 42-22 victory.
