Borough Council made a number of decisions in late June, from pools to grants, but some residents, namely Councilwoman Helen Halleman, were preoccupied with a sign.

Zoners and council, after more than a year of debate, voted to allow St. Luke's University Hospital to install a new sign proudly proclaiming its affiliation with Temple University in view of Delaware Avenue.

Halleman and Zoning officer Suzanne Poroszlai were confounded by the final decision and the sign's necessity. They each said a small, tasteful sign at the Ostrum Street Estes building is visible from Delaware Avenue and perfectly useful.

The hospital will now also install a massive, billboard-like sign on the building that Halleman says will look like a commercial eyesore, and Poroszlai said it will still not be visible from the more heavily-trafficked Route 378. "So why bother?" she asked.

Construction is now inevitable, she said, and added the hospital would likely erect it as soon as possible.

On regular business, Council President Larry Rapp said a $131,000 grant proposal to Northampton County Gaming Commission for borough emergency services equipment had passed its first vote for clearance.

Rapp also reminds the community Delaware Avenue reconstruction will begin July 9, and to consider drive times and routes when passing through.
