After first title since '96, girls fall at states

A great season came to an end on Monday for Northampton's softball team.

The Konkrete Kids gained Northampton's first District 11 4A championship since 1996 last Thursday with a 3-0 victory over Liberty.

But, the Kids' season ended Monday at the same Patriot's Park field when District 1's North Penn Maidens took a 1-0 win on Jackie Bilotti's one-hitter.

The Konkrete Kids, who finished 22-3, got only a fourth-inning single from Tori Gollie and a base on balls by Megan Tiwold in the second inning as their season ended.

Meanwhile, Marly Laubach gave up only two hits-both in the fourth inning-as she set North Penn down 1-2-3 in the other six innings.

Erin Maher opened the fourth with an infield single, stole second and moved to third on Belotti's groundout before scoring on Vicky Tumasz's single.

Northampton coach Sally Whittaker-Kahan said her girls struck out only once and hit the ball solid several times only to be turned into outs.

Meanwhile, in the District 11 title game, Laubach scattered four hits while her teammates picked up seven and scored once in the first and twice in the fifth.

Leandra Sterner opened the game for the Kids with a triple down the left field line and scored on Taylor Kerbacher's groundout.

The Kids added two more runs in the fifth when Kendra Makovsky opened the inning with her second single, Lauren Brosky sacrificed her to second and Amber Saylor came in to run for Brosky. After Sterner's groundout moved Saylor to third, Kerbacher picked up her second RBI with a single. Megan Tiwold walked and Kerbacher scored as Gollie reached base on an error.

Earlier, the Kids beat Parkland 2-1 in the semifinal game as Gollie doubled home one run and Bri Dalton singled in Gollie.

Laubach got the win and survived a scare in the seventh when the first two batters reached base. But a dribbler back to Laubach started a pitcher to first to catcher double play and Laubach struck out the final Trojans.

Whittaker-Kahan praised her team, saying, "All 18 girls took part and never let down," she said. "Our coaches (Stef Kerbacher and Bob Hock) did their part too. It was a complete effort all season long."
