LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Kids come back to knock off Zephyrs

It was a dose of revenge on one end and a tough pill to swallow on the other side.

Northampton squeaked out a five-game, 19-25, 21-25, 25-13, 25-22, 15-10, victory over Whitehall Monday night to set themselves up closer to clinching a Lehigh Valley Conference playoff spot in volleyball.

Whitehall (6-5, 4-5) let a 2-0 lead slip out of its reach against the K-Kids, as Northampton (13-3, 9-2) won the final three games to pull out an important victory.

The win puts Northampton right in the hunt for an LVC playoff spot, since Bethlehem Catholic swept Liberty in three games Monday night to put both schools in a tie atop the LVC East division.

With each team having two divisional matches left on the calendar, the Kids won't know their fate for the LVC playoffs until week's end.

"There are a lot of conference games left this week, so I have no idea where this puts us, but it can't hurt, I know that," said Northampton head coach Doug Fehnel about Monday's win. "I keep telling the boys to take care of things on our side and we'll see what happens at the end of the week."

For Whitehall head coach George Cowitch, Monday's loss on their home court was a bitter pill, especially with it being senior night for the Zephyrs.

"Definitely one of the toughest regular season losses in awhile," Cowitch said. "As for the LVC, it ends our playoff chances at this point, it's the first time we haven't been in them since 2009. "Northampton didn't do anything different than before [when Whitehall beat them the first time], we just made way too many mistakes in games three, four and five. What it eventually comes down to is who wants it more, and we have to dig deeper and figure that out."

Whitehall had already clinched a district playoff berth last week with a win over Allen, but was working with a different lineup against the Kids to test out the waters.

Building a 2-0 lead certainly paved the way towards a win, but the Kids didn't let that diffuse their confidence.

"With being down 0-2, our team could have packed it in," Fehnel said. "Instead, they really showed some heart and teamwork to overcome the deficit."

Northampton took on Parkland last night in a monumental game in the league and finish up with Nazareth on Friday.

Whitehall took on Nazareth last night and battle Parkland Friday in a match that will further determine league ramifications.

"When we focus, we are tough to beat," Cowitch said. "We struggle with that, we can't choose when to play and not to play, we must go all the time. The Parkland match is important for morale, and moving forward to districts."
