LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Schoenberger 3rd

Josh Schoenberger made two previous trips to the Lehigh Valley Conference Tennis Tournament and came away empty handed each time.

Monday, the Northampton senior had his best showing in his final appearance at the event, taking third place at No. 2 singles for his first career medal.

"I went further than I thought I would," he said. "I was hitting a better forehand. I wasn't hitting it out of bounds. I kept the ball in play and took care of key points."

Schoenberger, the No. 3 seed in the No. 2 singles bracket, had a first-round bye then beat Liberty's Brendan Cunningham in a quarterfinal, 8-6. He lost to eventual champ Roshan Joshi of Parkland, 10-1 in the semifinal. He secured his meal with a 10-5 win over Easton's Colin Winders in third-place match.

"I felt pretty good," said Schoenberger. "As a team we did pretty good. We all made it to the second round."

The Kids' No. 1 singles player Geoff Rybitski earned a first-round bye as the No. 1 seed. He lost his opening match to No. 5 seed Dan Schoenborn of Central Catholic, 8-4.

At No. 3 singles, Northampton's Tyler Nicholas was seed 12th, but knocked off No. 5 Calvin Carpenter of Nazareth via 7-3 tiebreaker. His quarterfinal match also went to a tiebreaker set. This time Nicholas it, 7-5, to No. 4 seed Ross Sonnenblick of Freedom.

Andrew Burger and Nate Xander teamed up as the Kids' No. 2 doubles team. Seeded 11th, they beat Allen's top doubles pairing in the first round before falling to Becahi's Marcin Borganli and Paolo Turco, 8-2, in a quarterfinal match.

Northampton's No. 3 doubles team of Justin Burger and Andrew Serensits, seeded eighth, beat Dieruff's Devon Monters and Al Carbone, 8-0 in the first round. They lost their next match to top-seeded Niko Franekic and Luke Mesco of Bethlehem Catholic, 8-3.
