The Florida Room at Fellowship Manor, Fullerton, was the perfect setting for Esther Schwenk's 100th birthday celebration April 15.

The soft-spoken centenarian, whose eyes sparkled as the large gathering sang "Happy Birthday," said she was overcome by the outpouring of friendship not only on her birthday but also every day at Whitehall Manor from staff, residents and family.

"I can't believe it," said Schwenk as she sat at the table, clutching an array of colored roses, a decorated birthday cake in front of her.

"She's a sweetheart, a wonderful lady,"said Alexis Stengel. director of activities at Whitehall Manor.

"Trouble," is the nickname activities aide Rachel Eltz has for Schwenk and this brings a smile to the face of the honoree, who raises her finger in appreciation of the bond the pair has.

Among those present for the special event was Schwenk's daughter, Jean.

In her earlier years, Schwenk lived in Northampton and later owned a grocery store in North Catasauqua. Before coming to Whitehall Manor, she lived for years on Union Street in Fullerton.

"From her window at the manor, she could see the house she had lived in," Stengel said.

In her younger years, Schwenk worked at a cigar factory and enjoyed gardening and crocheting. She and her late husband, William, enjoyed traveling, and developed a special fondness for Florida.

Schwenk said her favorite food is simple: "applesauce and mashed potatoes."
