LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Volleyball shocks Becahi

You can call Tuesday night a historic night for Northampton volleyball. The K-Kids registered their first victory ever over Bethlehem Catholic - 25-16, 17-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-11 - to truly make this a memorable start to the season.

The K-Kids sit at 6-2 overall and 4-2 in the Lehigh Valley Conference as they continue this week's action.

Head coach Doug Fehnel knows an improved squad is on the horizon from last year's 10-8 team that qualified for the district postseason, but keeping that pace is now the primary agenda for the K-Kids.

"Since the beginning of the season, these kids have had the mindset that they can compete with any team in the league," said Fehnel. "The kids are playing with a lot of heart and intensity right now. It's the team's first win ever over Becahi, which about sums it up."

Dakota Wilson had 27 assists for Northampton, while Mike Holihan and Josh Palenchar each added 13 and 10 kills respectively.

Following last week's defeat to Emmaus, emotions may have wavered, but that all changed after knocking off Becahi.

"We played poorly and were still in every game," Fehnel said of the Emmaus loss, which resulted in a 28-26, 25-15, 25-22 result. "Against Becai, everyone stepped up from our setter Dakota Wilston moving the ball around, to our power hitters, Josh Palenchar and Josh Morgan making big plays at the net, to our middle hitters making huge blocks, and of course our opposite side hitter Mike Holihan smashing the ball down the line. I feel that the match was won by playing strong defense."

The Kids now have to move forward, starting with tonight's road tilt at an upstart Freedom (4-4) squad, who have won three out of their last four matches after a 1-3 start to the season.

Focusing on where his team currently stands in respect to last year's team is also a mute point. Fehnel just wants to keep improving before they get back into divisional play, where they have already lost to Parkland in four games and Whitehall in five.

"I have no idea what our record was last year at this point since I don't really focus on that," he said. "We have our eyes set on districts and would like to change the end result when we meet Parkland and Whitehall towards the end of the year."
