Track teams 'doing some good things' so far
So far this season, Northampton head track and field coach Tim Caffrey has been pleased with his team's early showing.
Heading into this week, the Kids recently had a victorious meet over Dieruff and also participated in the Whitehall Zephyr Relays, a meet that had some different twists and turns along the way. Against Dieruff, the Kids swept both the boys' and girls' portions with respective scores of 99-50 and 82-67, as they had several multiple winners among the boys' and girls'.
"Overall, we have been doing some good things," said the veteran coach. "On the boys' side, our throwers are off to a good start. We also had some boys who did well in same field and running events. On the girls' side, we have had some good performances from girls in the high and long jumps.
"We have some seniors who have done well in the past and a growing group of underclassmen who will help us."
Kory DeCesaris, who has made his mark in the past at districts and in state meet last season, has been throwing well in the shot put, discus, and javelin for the Kids. He was an integral part of their success as they gained first-place finishes in the Zephyr Relays. DeCesaris threw 49-04 in the shot put (first), 124-06 in the discus (first), and 155-10 in the javelin (second) at the Zephyr Relays.
"Kory (DeCesaris) has been doing a really nice job for us," said Caffrey. "He has a strong finish to last season and we expect him to have a solid year for us. We were able to sweep through all of the throws and our combined scores were very good."
Caffrey also cited the performances of Jared Fenon and Brad Klucarits, who also both threw well in all of the throwing events. Fenon first third in the shot put at the Zephyr Relays with a throw of 46-043, and fifth overall in the discus with a throw of 114-0. Klucarits was ninth in both the javelin (129) and shot put (40-7) at the Zephyr Relays.
Also on the boys' side, the team of Jared Bauer, Blake Boehm, Troy Opplinger, and Tim Kelly finished first in the boys' 4 X110 Meter Hurdle Shuttle in a time of 111.09 at the Zephyr Relays.
Eric Filipovits took top honors in the girls' high jump at the Zephyr Relays with a leap of 5-02. Teammate Allison Horn was fifth overall with a leap of 4-06. Both girls combined scores helped take top team honors in the event.
Also at the Zephyr Relays, Olivia Walters recorded a third-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 34, and Hannah Marth notched a third-place finish in the javelin with a toss of 102-9.
In the girls'4 X200 relay, the team of Filipovits, Horn, Erica Kusmider, and Serena Kocher took third with a time of 154.2
"We're off to a nice start," said Caffrey. "We'll see how everything works out for us in the next couple of weeks."
