Girls improve to 7-0

The streak goes on for Northampton's softball team.

The Konkrete Kids passed a crucial test Tuesday with a 2-0 victory over Emmaus - a Lehigh Valley Conference contender. The win boosted the Kids' record to 4-0 in the LVC and 7-0 overall as they and Bethlehem Catholic are the only unbeaten teams in the conference.

After routing Northern Lehigh 11-1 in a nonleague game, and edging Nazareth 5-4 in 11 innings in a LVC North clash, the Kids find themselves with a "target on their backs."

Coach Sally Whittaker-Kahn, speaking cautiously after the win over Emmaus, said, "It certainly was a good league win. But we can't get complacent and I don't expect our girls to be over confident, especially with the leadership our six seniors exhibit."

Whittaker-Kahn expects the girls to stay focused.

"We're taking every game day-by-day and inning-by-inning," she said. "The girls are a tight-knit group and work hard together."

Meanwhile, in Tuesday's win, seniors Marly Laubach and Megan Tiwold were the standouts.

Laubach hurled a one hitter - the lone hit was a two-out double in the seventh by Brooke Patterson. Laubach had nine strikeouts to boost her season total to 72.

Tiwold drove in both runs, scoring junior Taylor Kerbacher with a single in the first and doubling home junior Bri Dalton in the sixth. Tiwold wound up with two hits as did Kerbacher.

In the extra-inning win over Nazareth, the Kids trailed for the first time this season as Northampton rallied to tie it at 2-2 after seven innings. Nazareth scored once in the 10th only to have Northampton tie it again at 3-3. In the 11th, Nazareth went ahead again at 4-3 but the Kids recovered with two runs and a 5-4 victory.

Junior Leandra Sterner was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Dalton had two hits and Erin Tiwold, Megan's twin sister, had two hits and an RBI.

In the 11-1 romp at Northern Lehigh, Laubach gave up three hits and Erin Tiwold had a two-run triple while junior catcher Hannah Peter had a double and a run scored.

The Kids return to action Thursday against Dieruff at Patriots Park before facing Central Catholic in a non league LVC Play Day game at noon on Saturday at Parkland.

The "big game" comes next Tuesday when the Kids entertain Bethlehem Catholic.
