Boys look to climb over .500

Northampton head baseball coach Mick Sugra doesn't expect his team to be hovering around the .500 mark at season's end, but that plateau is currently acceptable to his team.

"It was great to get back to .500," said Sugra, whose team recently recorded victories over Central Catholic and Pocono Mountain East to even its mark at 3-3 to begin the week. "We are finally able to climb back to where we should be.

"We have already played six games and against some very good teams. We started string then hit a few bumps. But we have the players here to have a good finish."

Against Central Catholic in an 8-4 win, Sugra noted the performance of Harley Davidson, who threw five strong innings. Cole Derhammer and Joey Wittreich closed Central Catholic down the final four innings.

"He (Davidson) did a nice job," said Sugra. "He is a young pitcher who is really starting to put his game together. When he isn't pitching, e has been a plus with his glove and his bat."

In a 5-3 victory over Pocono Mountain East, Sugra credited the hitting of Jaden Daubert, Matt Durich, and Brandon Heimbach, all of who had key hits to lead the Kids back from a 3-1 deficit. Garrett Kunkle and Logan Steigerwalt combined on the mound for the victory.

He also highlighted the overall play of Davidson, Cody Kramer, Mark Szoke and Jeff Wesolowski, all of whom have been consistent hitters throughout the year. Wesolowski has been the Kids' most consistent hitter, as his batting average has hovered around the .500 mark all season. He drove in two runs in the victory over Pocono Mountain East.

"Those have been our most consistent guys," stated Sugra. "We also have had good seasons from (Brandon) Heimbach, and Dane Hooven. Overall, we have been pretty consistent with our hitting, and now our pitching is starting to come around.

"We figured our pitching might take some time, but it is starting to fall into place."

The Kids are optimistic their recent rash of victories can be a springboard for the future. They had a date with Dieruff this week, and then will battle perennial favorites Nazareth and Bethlehem Catholic next week.

"We have played six very good baseball teams and basically we have liked what we have done," admitted Sugra. "Looking back, it is probably good for us to have this many games under our belts.

"We appear to be gaining more confidence as a team with each game. We just have to be consistent with good pitching and fielding. Every game will be a test for us, but we believe we can pass most of them."
