Kids fall to PHS
In what seemed like the blink of an eye, momentum had suddenly shifted to Northampton's dugout.
After falling behind 3-0 after two innings of Tuesday's baseball game against Parkland, the Konkrete Kids used a four-run third inning to take a one-run lead.
Unfortunately for the Konkrete Kids (1-3), that momentum seemed to shift back to the Trojans just as quickly as it was gained. Parkland scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to go back on top, and added two more in the sixth to secure a 7-4 victory and remain unbeaten on the season.
"You know they're [Parkland] always going to keep coming at you," said head coach Mick Sugra. "That's what happened today. I think the real difference wasn't necessarily the errors today, it was the Ks. They had one strikeout in the sixth inning. We had four or five strikeouts looking alone. You put the ball in play and put the bat on the ball, it may be a different ballgame."
The Konkrete Kids had three errors on the day.
With two runs already across home plate in third inning and just one out, the Konkrete Kids sought to cut the Trojans' deficit even more. Harley Davidson - who went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a walk - then smashed a one-out double that hit the right field fence, scoring Dane Hooven and Jeff Wesolowski (2-for-4 with an RBI), both who previously reached base on singles.
That gave the Konkrete Kids a 4-3 lead, but didn't last too long.
The Trojans got their first two batters on base in the bottom of the inning, and after Zach Merkle scored on a wild pitch, Brad Vasilik hit a key two-out RBI-single that put Parkland in front once again.
"We got to put the ball in play, and you got to field the ball in this league," said Sugra. "If we can't do that we're going to struggle. "
The Konkrete Kids had a chance in the seventh with runners on first and second with just one out. However, much like what was seen in the second inning with two base runners and no outs, the Konkrete Kids failed to bring anyone home. They just didn't get that big hit.
"If you put the ball in play, you don't know what's going to happen," said Sugra. "You got to make the guys field the ball and make them make the throws."
Cody Kramer went 2-for-3 with two doubles and a walk, and Mark Szoke finished 2-for-3 with a walk and run scored.
Blake Hein struggled in three innings of work, giving up five runs on eight Trojan hits. Logan Steigerwalt replaced Hein and pitched well until giving up two late runs in the sixth.
The Konkrete Kids will host Central Catholic on Thursday. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
