Whittaker-Kahan excited about seniors
Don't look now, but spring has sprung and it's time for high school softball.
Sally Whittaker-Kahan can't wait to get her Northampton team into action and the Konkrete Kids are scheduled to open their season Friday at Northern Lehigh.
"It looks like a true team," says Whittaker-Kahan as she readies her squad. "We have a team with leadership, enthusiasm, talent, ability, and athleticism," the coach said as she begins her fifth season with the Kids.
"Our seniors are outstanding. We have six girls that will provide the leadership we need," to compete in the Lehigh Valley Conference.
"We have three goals - the LVC Championship, the District 11 crown and a PIAA title," she added.
"We'll ride the pitching of Marly Laubach (all-conference last year) and the hitting and fielding of Tori Gollie (also all-conference last year)," the coach adds. "Our seniors are just awesome girls."
Joining Laubach and Gollie are seniors Kendra Makovsky, Lauren Brosky, and twins Erin and Megan Tiwold.
Laubach will also do most of the pitching with Ollie at third base (and maybe pitching), Makovsky at first, Megan Tiwold at second, Erin Tiwold in the outfield and Makovsky as a utility player. Add juniors Brianna Dalton at shortstop (also all-conference last year), Taylor Kerbacher in the outfield, Hannah Peters at catcher and newcomer Leandra Sterner as a utility player. Then, you also have sophomores Amber Saylor (outfield) and Kendel Reed (utility) and that forms Whittaker-Kahan's "awesome" team.
"Most of the girls are so talented that I could fit them anywhere in the field or batting lineup," said the coach.
"Our hopes and expectations are high," says Whittaker-Kahan. "Our girls know softball is not an individual sport, it's a team thing and they have to keep their eyes on the prize."
As for the LVC, coach thinks "Our division is the toughest, but look out for Liberty, Bethlehem Catholic, and Emmaus. It'll be an interesting year."
Assisting Whittaker-Kahan will be Bob Hock and Stefani Kerbacher with Kevin Mann and Julie Maurek handling the junior varsity.
