Boyko looking toward NFL dream

If there's one thing that former Northampton graduate Billy Boyko took away from last week's Pro Day at Lehigh, it's that he's faster than Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o.

Boyko, one of Lehigh's best football players from this past season, was joined by teammates Ryan Spadola, Bryan Andrews and Gabe Johnson at Lehigh's third-ever pro day at the Cundey Varsity House and Rauch Fieldhouse.

Boyko, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior linebacker, was Lehigh's MVP this past season. He ran a 4.42 in the 40-yard dash, which was faster than any of the linebackers from this year's NFL combine, where Missouri's Zavier Gooden posted a time of 4.47.

In a speed hungry NFL, posting a prominent time is always a major plus for pro prospects at any position.

"I thought my workout went real well," said Boyko. "I had anxiety before the day started. I was confident in how I trained and trusted my ability."

Representatives from 15 NFL franchises showed up for the workout and Boyko was pulled to the side by several teams following his showcase for one-on-one conversational sessions.

Boyko jumped 37.5 inches in the vertical leap and had 15 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press.

Now he just enters the waiting game before the NFL draft takes place on April 25-27, where he hopes to join the likes of former Lehigh offensive lineman and current member of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Will Rackley, who was taken in the third round of the 2011 draft.

"I'm basically just waiting for teams to contact me about coming in for a workout," said Boyko. "A lot of things can happen between now and the draft. I let my agent handle all that stuff. When he calls me, I'll be ready to go."

Boyko didn't want to speculate on his chances of getting drafted or on the chances of signing on with a team as a free agent, but the one thing he's grateful for is the support of so many people throughout this journey of his.

"I can't say that when I left Northampton that I ever envisioned being a pro football player," he said. "I'm just blessed to be in this position and to have these opportunities. I'm definitely thankful for the position I'm in right now."
