It may not have always been in the same place, but Lehigh Supply Appliance has always offered what its customers needed. And that's a focus on customer service celebrating its 90th anniversary this year.

Co-owner Greg Horgash, who with Chuck Deppen took over for last owners in 1998, said the current 312 W. Broad Street location is actually the business' third. It was first started – selling what one can assume were very different machines that those available today – as a mom and pop store in Hellertown around 1923.

As Lehigh Supply Appliance changed hands over the decades it moved first to Bethlehem's Main Street before settling into its current home in the 1970s.

Horgash said the business expanded from just Maytag to all major appliance brands back in 2000, but what they offer has never changed. "We do everything ourselves," he said. "We deliver and do installations and even subcontracting.

"We're of the opinion that we want to treat customers the way we want to be treated. It's all about customer service. Not like in those big box stores; If you call us you'll get somebody to talk to."

Horgash said that's important because if customers need help, he, Deppen and their seven other employees will talk the people through easy fixes if they can and send out a service technician if they can't.

Horgash said he's enjoyed helping people over the years and has seen home appliances change quite a lot. Today, bottom freezers are immensely popular because unlike those made in the '60s and '70s, the current designs use easy-pull drawers and leave most commonly-0used items up at eye level. He also said modern machines of all sorts, from refrigerators to ranges to various washers have sensitive electronics to increase efficiency in energy and water use.

Overall, Horgash said, he's still happy to be keep Lehigh Supply Appliance going. "The great thing about being a business owner is everything stops with you. You make it what you want.

"It's great to talk to such a diverse bunch of people and put something in their house that they use all the time and that they're happy with and enjoy."
