The pavilion has certainly been an asset to the American Club of Coplay.

Its prominence reaches far beyond the pavilion, a spacious indoor facility where many organizations hold fundraising activities. The pavilion is also widely known as the location where more than 1.6 million hoagies have been made over the years.

Coplay Mayor Joseph Bundra on Sunday presented the American Club of Coplay with a proclamation honoring it for its many programs and projects.

Appearing at the club's meeting March 10, Bundra said Coplay has a rich history of residents and groups willing to give of their time for the benefit of the community. He said the American Club of Coplay ranks high in such efforts.

"The American Club of Coplay, founded Sept. 8, 1936, has exhibited the same community focus and willingness to [provide] long productive services in our community," Bundra said.

Club President Gerald Deutsch and the active members of the American Club of Coplay have shown a commitment to being involved in community functions, such as Coplay Community Days and St. Peter's Homecoming, he said.

The club has provided its pavilion to organizations holding 5K and 10K races on the Ironton Rail-Trail for the benefit of children and adults with health or disability issues. It has also assisted many other groups, including area Girl Scout troops selling cookies.

The pavilion and its hoagie shop located off Cherry Street serve as the club's home base. Earlier the grounds were used for the borough post office, state liquor store and a patriotic women's organization.
