Four wrestlers head to states
Bobby Fehr has accomplished one of the goals he had set for himself in the second half of the wrestling season.
Knocking off Whitehall's Matt Bonshak was a hurdle he's done twice over the past two weeks at districts and most recently at last weekend's Northeast Regional 3A tournament.
Fehr took care of Bonshak by a 6-2 decision in the semifinals, but couldn't take care of another thorn in his side in the finals against Easton's Evan Disora.
The Easton senior pulled out a 3-2 decision in the 160-pound championship to force Fehr to settle for his second straight silver medal in as many weeks.
More importantly, however, Fehr is moving on to Hershey along with three teammates, as the PIAA championships kick off Thursday afternoon at the Giant Center.
"I'm just focused on taking things one match at a time," said Fehr of this weekend's approach at states. "Reaching the finals would be great, but I'm not thinking about that. All I can think about is taking one match at a time. I don't want to be over confident heading out there."
Fehr (32-9) opens the tournament against Zach Voytek (40-3) of Greensburg Salem in the preliminary round. Dealing with the likes of a taller Disora will probably be out the equation for Fehr, as Disora sits atop the bracket in a weight class that features returning state champion, Chance Marstellar (36-0) of Kennard Dale.
Marstellar is favored to win the weight after dropping from 170-pounds, but Fehr's bottom half of the bracket also features Central Dauphin's Garrett Peppelman (43-1), a state champion in his own regard.
Both wrestlers are favored to meet in the finals. With Fehr understanding the depth and talent of his competition, he knows to only tackle one round at a time in Hershey.
"I didn't make it out to Hershey last year," said the Kids' junior. "I'm just going to let it all hang out. There's a bunch of tough guys at my weight, but I know if I can wrestle my way, I can compete with anyone."
Zach Valley (120) also took second last week, losing to Liberty's Grimaldi Gonzalez 3-1 in the regional final.
Valley (33-7) looks to bring home his second straight medal from Hershey after taking fifth as a sophomore.
He opens with Michael Marino (33-4) of Garnet Valley in his preliminary bout.
Michael Scheetz (106) and Todd Hetrick (113) also advanced to Hershey with third-place finishes at regionals.
Scheetz (27-10) squares off against Marple Newtown's Jason Rinaldi (32-3), while Hetrick (26-13) has a difficult opening match against Southeast regional champ, Zack Fuentes (43-4) of Norristown.
