Three wrestlers earn silver medals
Three Northampton wrestlers reached the finals at last week's District 11 3A tournament, but all came up short in bids to claim gold.
Michael Scheetz (103), Zach Valley (120) and Bobby Fehr (160) fell in the finals, but represented the program well, as Northampton finished sixth overall in the team standings with 103 points.
The K-Kids advanced six wrestlers to this weekend's Northeast Regional 3A tournament at Liberty and head coach Seth Lisa was pleased for the most part with the performance.
"Our tournament went pretty well," Lisa said. "We wanted to finish in the top five and we came up short. It was a difficult placing round for us going 2-4. We need to finish these tournaments on a better note if we want to accomplish our individual goals."
Zach Valley had the closest defeat in the championship finals, falling to Liberty's Grimaldi Gonzalez by a 4-3 affair.
A third period escape by Gonzalez was the final point that held up for the victory.
"In a match like this, you have to be the first one to attack and Grim got me first," said Valley of his finals bout. "I got the reversal on him, but I'm going to have get a takedown if I want to beat him."
Scheetz started things off for the Kids against Nazareth's Tyrone Klump in the 106-pound championship, but Klump led the way with a dominating 7-0 victory.
Fehr was able to knock off Whitehall's Matt Bonshak with a 5-2 decision in the semifinals, to avenge a regular season loss to the Zephyr, but he couldn't make it two paybacks in a row, falling to Easton's Evan Disora 3-1 in the finals.
Lisa echoed some of Valley's sentiments about starting fast and being aggressive if the Kids want to reverse their fortune this week at regionals.
"Our guys need to be more aggressive from the start of the match," he said. "Everyone of those guys got scored on first and then couldn't get through the defense of their opponents. If we score first, we control the pace of the match and not them.
"They all need to wrestle like there is nothing to lose. We want all of our regional qualifiers to advance. It's going to take solid wrestling, with great effort to get it done but I think they all can make it to Hershey."
Jason Kocher (195) and Imad Azar (220) were the only Kids to win in their medal rounds, as Kocher received a forfeit in his fifth place bout. Azar also took fifth, edging Kevin Hughes of Stroudsburg by a 1-0 margin.
Todd Hetrick (113) advanced to regionals with a fourth-place finish, losing to Easton's Evan Fidelibus 2-1 in the bronze medal round.
Valley and company hope they can replicate a trio of wrestlers in the finals this week as well, but breaking through the silver medal barrier is now on the agenda.
"It was good to have three in the finals and move six guys onto regionals," said Valley. "I just want us to do the same at regionals and keep moving forward."
