Whitehall Township will grant a certificate of occupancy to National Plastics and Manufacturing Company once it meets several conditions.

These include installing a state-of-the-art fire suppression system before the company can move into the Riverside Business Center on Lehigh Avenue in Fullerton. The company recycles plastic materials.

Mayor Edward D. Hozza Jr. said Friday the township is monitoring the work directed by the commissioners in January. When it is completed, a final inspection will take place.

The installation of the fire suppression system at the 40,000-square-foot plant space is under way, according to Hozza. The installation of the equipment addresses one of several concerns expressed by the commissioners and neighbors.

The company, owned by Munish Suri, must also install a cinder block firewall to separate recycling operations from areas of the plant, perform noise testing once the site is operational, and pay up to $500 per year for the township engineer to read quarterly reports and for township officials to make unannounced visits.

Suri already had electrical lines installed at the site. The company is moving to Whitehall from its Palmer Township location. There was a minor fire at the Palmer Township plant in July 2011, which Suri said started when an employee performing a test burn on a piece of plastic did not properly extinguish the material. The company is moving to Whitehall because it has outgrown its Palmer location.

The plant will have 14 to 15 employees working in two shifts, from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m.

The sprawling building, which is near the Lehigh River, was once home to one of the township's major employers, Tarkett USA flooring.
